Sam

It had been a week since I had gone back home, and things had returned to normal in my household, with Dad meeting Johnny outside for their game nights.

On the other hand, my mother had the tact to leave the matter alone and had refrained from pressuring me to reconsider when I had told her that I was spending time with Gus Downton. I knew what she was thinking—a rich man from an esteemed family must have been a good catch. But I was still on the fence about starting something for fear that I couldn’t finish it.

If only Gus would turn away from tech for one minute, he would appreciate the world that God had blessed us with a whole lot more. It was another concern of mine. He wasn’t just another young man in touch with the world’s advancements; they were nearly taking over his whole life.

One evening as I was sitting out on the porch enjoying a glass of wine after dinner, my phone screen shone bright with his name flickering.

“Howdy, cowboy,” I answered.

“Hey, beautiful. How are ya?”

“All good here. How’s the new system?”

“Well, we’re still discoverin’ what it can do and what its weaknesses are. These things take time.”

“Good luck.”

“Thanks. Hey, listen… the other night, I promised Billy that I’d take ‘im campin’ backlands. Y’know, somewhere off the grid for a change.”

“Wow,” I tittered, genuinely astounded. “You? Off the grid?”

“Hey, I’m still a cowboy!”

I laughed. “Well, it sounds like fun.”

“It won’t be if I risk it and take ‘im all by myself.”

“Whaddya mean?”

“We need a trained guide. I know nothin’ of these areas, so we’d get lost in a heartbeat.”

I knew he was trying to make amends for how our date had gone last week, which was rather sweet of him.

“Are you offerin’ me a job?” I giggled.

“Sure, if you wanna call it that. But we’ll be payin’ ya in roasted marshmallows and ghost stories.”

Damn his charm. I couldn’t resist.

“When are ya thinkin’?”

“We can move Friday after lunch if you’re free.”

“Lemme talk to Noel and see if he’ll need me over the weekend. I’ll call you back.”

“Perfect. Thanks, babe.”

“Well, Billy could use the adventure.”

“Huh, is that so? Alright, I can live with it.”

“You’re a big boy. You’ll survive.”

I got in touch with Noel to see if the center could do without me for a couple of days. He said there was only one job due for Saturday and that the client wouldn’t mind moving it to Thursday if I wanted.

After confirming with Gus that I was ready to join, I went up to my room and started packing supplies: two pairs of cargo pants, four pairs of cotton shirts, a big sweater in case the nights got chilly, a hat, and my hiking boots. My mother walked in on me as I placed the last of the items into the duffel bag and zipped it shut.

“Another stay at Downton’s ranch?” she sneered, raising an eyebrow as she leaned with her shoulder against the doorway.

“We’re takin’ Billy Downton campin’.
